Often underwriting the expenses himself, Russell single-handedly kept lacrosse alive in the Hamilton, Ontario region through the 19'0's. His financial backing ensured the success of the 19'' Mann Cup champions, Hamilton Tigers. He was president of the Canadian Lacrosse Association from 19'8-'9.
